Going to Carolina
I love all kinds of weddings, but I find it especially charming when couples that have been together for years make the decision to tie the knot. I don’t think marriage is necessary for a long, happy union, but I DO believe that there’s a special kind of commitment that comes from standing in front of the most important people in your life and declaring your love for someone, so I’m always delighted when people decide to make that leap.
Bryan and Rachael are old friends of mine - Rachael, Laurie and I all used to work together. I haven’t seen either of them in ages (they finished school and moved on to bigger and better things in life) so I was doubly delighted when Rachael contacted me about creating their wedding invites.
The BEST thing about doing these invites is that the two of them have impeccable taste. Rachael came to me with the idea of creating a poster, drawing reference from concert posters and flyers. Added to that were the unusual elements of the wedding itself; a country/farm wedding for city folk, set in the rolling hills of North Carolina, with a nod to Rachael’s Japanese heritage. Somehow, I think we managed to make it work!
Here are some behind the scenes shots of printing the invite. The first image shows the printing process after the design has been finalized, and the screens have been exposed.
Top right: washing out the screen after exposure
Bottom right: inking the screen
Left: First pass!
Mixing the transparent yellow/green ink for the second pass!
Pass #2 - transparency creates a third color where the blue and yellow/green overlap.
In the belly of the beast! Stacked and ready to chop on our cutter from 1871.
Finished pieces!
Best wishes to Rachael and Bryan; thanks for letting us work on a small part of your special day!
