Mmmonday! Candle Cafe
While planning our recent trip to NYC, Mr. Pony and I were on the same page when it came to priorities - breakfast, lunch and dinner! Massachusetts suburbs aren’t exactly teeming with gourmet or ethnic restaurants and trying to find a vegetarian dish (besides pasta) anywhere in these parts can be challenging. So, this was our chance to eat our way through the Big Apple and that’s exactly what we did!
Without a doubt, the highlight of our culinary adventures was Candle Cafe. Not only did we enjoy an amazing meal with a dear friend who recommended the place, but we met the owners of the restaurant, Joy and Bart. Their passion for vegetarian cuisine is evident in their personalities as well as in the dishes they serve. Specifically, the Seitan Chimichurri and the Carrot Cake blew us away. Their story is equally amazing and includes a lottery ticket worth $53,000!
We can’t wait to visit Candle Cafe again and hopefully run into Joy and Bart and try to convince them to open up shop in Boston! Please?!

Well, Miss Carrie, while my vegetarian days are behind me as of now, this place looks and sounds amazing!!! I do wish, however, that people could look at “vegetarian food” as just food, another culinary experience…as opposed to something as “the other” like it’s a religion you need to belong to in order to partake of, y’know?
If you ever got out this way I’ll take ya’ to Cafe Flora in Seattle. http://www.cafeflora.com/ Delightful! :)

Uncle B! Laurie is actually the one who went to Candle Cafe, but I’m going to make her take me when we go to NYC in May. :)
And yes - I fully agree with you about vegetarian food just being “food.” Period. I am not vegetarian, but enjoy going to vegetarian (and - gasp! - even vegan) restaurants. What I’d REALLY love to see is more of a mix in every restaurant. I hate the fact that so many restaurants have only a few vegetarian choices. Not fair!
Cafe Flora looks awesome. Maybe I’ll have to make a trip to Seattle a priority in 2010…
