It’s no secret that my most of my aesthetic is derived from fairly modern influences - mid-century graphic design, Scandinavian interiors, the color gray - but there is also a small kernel of my heart that yearns to go full-on maximalist. This piece of me craves a room decked out in pink and ochre, with Chinese silk lanterns, thrift store lamps, and something, ANYTHING, covered with giant roses. Michael Quinn’s Sneak Peek on Design*Sponge has reignited my longing for all that razzamatazz. (Photo above by Michelle Talan)

My last bachelorette apartment was packed to the brim with this aesthetic (in fact, my pink, orange and red bedroom was affectionately dubbed “Opium Den der Bun-Bun” due to the draped fabrics and bunny collection) but moving in to an open plan loft with my (now) husband made that sort of aesthetic more difficult to pull off…and much more difficult to maintain since older lofts are SO DUSTY. Now that we’re living in a house with smaller rooms, it might be time to reinvent a bit of our living space. I’m thinking my office in the new house might look pretty in pink. With gold pom-pom trim.

xoxo,
Carrie Pony

While planning our recent trip to NYC, Mr. Pony and I were on the same page when it came to priorities - breakfast, lunch and dinner! Massachusetts suburbs aren’t exactly teeming with gourmet or ethnic restaurants and trying to find a vegetarian dish (besides pasta) anywhere in these parts can be challenging. So, this was our chance to eat our way through the Big Apple and that’s exactly what we did!

Without a doubt, the highlight of our culinary adventures was Candle Cafe. Not only did we enjoy an amazing meal with a dear friend who recommended the place, but we met the owners of the restaurant, Joy and Bart. Their passion for vegetarian cuisine is evident in their personalities as well as in the dishes they serve. Specifically, the Seitan Chimichurri and the Carrot Cake blew us away. Their story is equally amazing and includes a lottery ticket worth $53,000!

We can’t wait to visit Candle Cafe again and hopefully run into Joy and Bart and try to convince them to open up shop in Boston! Please?!

Before bringing me home from a local shelter, Laurie and Jake watched hours and hours of The Dog Whisperer featuring Cesar Milan and his pit bull Daddy. They showed the world that pit bulls can be loving, calm family pets and that most dogs just need educated and caring owners in order to thrive. If you’ve seen the show, you know that it’s usually the people who need the most work, not the dogs.

Daddy, Cesar’s right-hand dog for 16 years, passed away peacefully on Friday surrounded by family.

If you would like to honor Daddy’s memory and the contribution he made to improve the lives of other animals, you can make a donation to Daddy’s Emergency Animal Rescue Fund, which will provide assistance for dogs who are victims of abuse or violence, man-made disasters (hoarder and puppy mill rescues), and large-scale natural disasters (hurricanes, fires, and other natural catastrophes).

Rest in peace Daddy.
Love, Wally

The Friendly Toast is a bit of a staple among my circle of friends; we tend to go there if we have a large group, if some of us want breakfast for dinner, if it’s Wednesday, if it’s Friday, etc. I’ve been slowly sampling their short list of house cocktails, but have avoided the “Suspicion” thus far because…well, I was suspicious. I couldn’t imagine that it would be very tasty. This past Friday, I was feeling bold and decided to give it a shot. Wow…#1 with a bullet (at the Toast, anyway).

Coco-cola, cherry puree, and Jägermeister?! Really? Yes, really. Trust me.

XO,
Carrie

p.s. Sorry for the sad looking photo. It was darker there than I thought!

Here are a few shots from my recent trip to Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Mr. Pony and I along with our friends who live in Oyster Bay visited the home and “summer white house” of Theodore Roosevelt. The house was brought to life by our amazing tour guide, Adrian Bogart Jr., a cousin of Humphrey and distant relative of the Roosevelts. Photography was not allowed inside the house, but you can see some of the interior on the National Park Service website. Whether you are a presidential history buff or not (I’m not), it’s definitely worth a visit, especially if Mr. Bogart is giving the tour!

My first attempt at a vegan block cheese was a quite a success! It looked a lot like cheese and the consistency was pretty good. The one thing I would change next time around is to reduce the mustard, maybe by a third, and increase the liquid smoke for a smokier Gouda flavor. I can’t wait to try the “buffalo mostarella” next!

1 3/4 cups water
1/2 cup chopped carrots
5 tablespoons agar flakes, or 1 1/2 tablespoons agar powder
1/2 cup chopped raw cashews
1/4 nutritional yeast flakes
3 tablespoons sesame tahini
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (I would reduce this, unless you want a strong mustard taste)
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
a few drops of liquid hickory smoke or hickory salt (optional)

Lightly oil a 3-cup bowl or mold with a rounded bottom and set aside. Combine the water and carrots in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and cook until very tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove lid and stir in agar flakes. Bring to a boil again. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until agar is dissolved, about 5 to 10 minutes longer.

Transfer to a blender and add the remaining ingredients. Process several minutes until completely smooth, scraping down the sides of the blender jar as necessary. Pour into the prepared container and smooth the top. Cool uncovered in the refrigerator. When completely cool, cover and chill several hours or overnight. To serve, turn out of the mold and slice into wedges.

I’m trying to convince Laurie Pony and Mr. Pony to buy one of these limited edition prints by Shepard Fairey, the proceeds help support pet adoption. Here’s what Shepard says about the project:

Homeless pets urgently need us to take the lead and speak out on their behalf, now more than ever! The “Lead By Example” ADOPT image is a powerful one and it is my hope that this new print will give people a way to advocate for these animals and show their support for pet adoption.
